Never in my recollection has church been canceled due to a few snow flakes. It’s entirely possible that my memory has been skewed by the excellent Minneapolis-area snowplow system (largely municipal and county, as opposed to private contractors), or that my parental units somehow knew that church would be closed and planned on staying home.
I did check that the buses in general, and my routes into Harvard Square in particular, were running. I failed to check the church web page, where there is a big news update about being closed. It honestly didn’t cross my mind.
My first clue should have been the sorts of traffic out on the road: snowplows attached to pickups, snowplows attached to dump trucks, snowplows attached to earth movers, MBTA buses, a handful of four-wheel drive vehicles, a guy on a bicycle… wait, go back one. Yes, there was one man braving the near-whiteout conditions and several inches of unplowed snow near the Intersection of Doom™ at Mt. Auburn St. and Fresh Pond Parkway.
Of course, if everyone lived near the workplace and place of worship and major commercial areas, on a public transit line, we could still have had church today. I made it from door to (locked with sign) door in under 25 minutes, which included walking to and from the bus stops, waiting for a bus, and stopping for coffee. Public Transit 1, Everyone Else 0.
I guess the little voice in my head tempting me to stay in bed, instead of the Devil as usual, was God telling me there was no church today.
