So, apparently my taste in the fit of a pair of jeans is identical to that of a 13-year-old skateboarder. The best fitting jeans I found at Kohl’s were two pair of JNCO Jeans, which unfortunately feature a large JNCO crown logo on the left thigh.

I like loose, comfortable pants, which probably explains the overlap with skaters. I normally wear a 32-34, which these days is hard enough to find as it is. I tried Regular Fit, Relaxed Fit, Loose Fit, Comfort Fit, and Low Rise Fit, but none of them had enough space in a key measurement: the distance from waistband to inseam, a measurement which is not specified explicitly on any pair of jeans I have ever seen. Most of the other fits are also too tight around the leg, having what I believe is called a “boot cut”.

I guess I have a tall pelvis, since I typically wear my pants fairly low, right on top of my pelvis, without a belt. Because these skater jeans are made extra long so that the cuffs can hang over your shoes and become all torn up and muddy, thus making a fashion statement, I actually bought them in 32-32. Combined with wearing them low on my waist, this is about the right length in the leg.

Speaking of belts, I am strongly considering investing in some sort of utility belt. This would not be to hold up my pants, but rather for the attachment of devices to my pants. My cell phone’s belt clip has completely destroyed one part of the waistband of my current pair of jeans, wearing away the edge until frayed.

Is there something wrong with me for wanting to have my cell phone and iPod clipped to the belt, with holsters for my glasses case and retainer case, and one of those retractable wire keychains? I’d probably toss on a multi-tool pouch and a coin purse for added measure. What sort of geek does this make me to actually want this? I am reminded of a Dilbert strip from a while ago…

  1. You understand why clothing in a waist size of 32-34 is hard to find, right? (It’s not because it’s rare, it’s because a majority of people fit that description.)

As for jeans… I’ve always detested denim. Once upon a time, I liked military BDUs for comfort + pockets, and they’re pretty loose. These days I’m pretty much only ever wearing dress slacks, and get those in stores where they adjust things to your taste when you buy them, so…

I think that would be Batman. ::grin::

Meanwhile, there is something sort of satisfying in knowing that boys, too, sometimes have a hard time finding a simple pair of pants that actually fit. Someday robots will sew them up to order for us, that is my hope. ::grin::

  3. Jeez, now you’re making me remember all my utility belt plans when I was little. I want one…

  4. Yeah, a good tailor will happily measure outseam as well as inseam, and be able to adjust the difference.

However, if you want more space, try looking for pants in more conservative styles — since modern fashion places the waistband a good bit lower than it used to, older-style pants have more room in the crotch to make up for being worn higher. If you can’t find pants like that new, try thrift stores.

I think it means that you want to star in the next Batman movie. ;-)

As for the pants size thing, I have much empathy with you. The only jeans I wear are Levi’s 501’s, because for some reason, they’re the only ones that hang exactly where I want them to.

  6. utility belt…that’s a great idea!

see, this is what happens with the male gender denies the need for purses. ha, you never see a woman shoving a 4 inch thick bundle of leather, money, and credit cards into her back pocket or being forced to find someplace to clip her gadgets!

that being said, i want a utility belt too. it’s harder to steal and allows for equitable weight distribution. not to mention it’s cool!
